Lessons Learned at a Networking Meeting

Today I finally made it to Ole Networking, the networking meeting for my college alums that I’ve been meaning to return to.  This was the 3rd time.

Every time I go I come away with such energized feeling.  It’s great.

Today, in addition to meeting some cool new people, I really enjoyed the presenter. Keith Lomen from AXA Equitable talked about wisdom that can change people’s lives.

I actually enjoyed how he presented himself almost as much as what he had to say.  He was a dynamic speaker, obviously passionate about his subject.  He also gave out a one-sheet handout with all the important points of his talk, but with blanks in the sentence that people could fill out as they heard him talk.  A very effective technique.

I must say, as a self-improvement enthusiast, most of his points were more of a reinforcement than a revelation.  But one thing he said was that a person’s capacity for progress can be measured by how many new people s/he meets and how many books s/he reads. Meeting new people was what I was doing, that I need to do more on a regular basis, but I’ve been negligent on reading lately.   Hmmmmm.

And which also reminds me, public speaking is a very, very important skill, no matter what you do in life.  Being able to communicate in a concise and clear manner is such an asset.  I need to see if there’s a Toastmaster group I can join around here.  I looked before and there wasn’t one but it’s been more than a year.  That’s something I plan on doing sooner or later.
