The Time to Keep Going Is When You Don’t Feel Like It

Reading The War of Art and learning to recognize the Resistance has been so useful.

Now I see him everywhere.

And indeed, I can use him as a compass.  Resistance shows up where I need to go.  And he tries to block me — the more important the task, the stronger his efforts.

It’s a daily battle.  I go to bed every night, bracing myself for the next day.  Because I need to keep pushing through Resistance.

It helps a great deal if I maintain a high energy level.  A good night’s sleep.  Healthy food.  Exercise.  Vitamins.  And above all, the history of victories over Resistance.  These are the matters that build my momentum.

Get in the Habit of Winning.

It seems that every moment presents a choice.  Do I Win or do I Give In?  And with Resistance rationalizing constantly, it’s sometimes hard to know which is which.  For example, at one moment, taking a break is the right thing to do.  But after 15 minutes, the right thing is to go back to work.  The answer is not the same every moment.  It’s a dynamic battleground, where the tactics are constantly changing.

But knowing Resistance leads to Habit of Winning.  On the other side is a greater sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.  Small victories add up to bigger ones.  Time to keep going is when I don’t feel like it.

I get it.

Now I just have to keep it up.

  1. Ari, I, too, recently read “The War of Art” and am having the same reaction/awareness to Resistance and its many ploys to derail me. One thing I’ve long used to help me stay positive is music. I am so susceptible to music and its effects on my mood, attitude and outlook. Now I’m finding that books like this one and others (Evil Plans, Crush It, etc.) are tools I can use to support myself in that way, as well. Just like I know what music to play to get me in the right frame of mind, I now also have passages in each of these books that I can (and do) read and re-read to help me stay on track and stay motivated. Love that!

Indeed, music is a powerful motivator and mood-setter. It’s a good idea to mark inspirational passages out of these books. I should develop my library/arsenal so I am equipped to keep going on those days when I really don’t feel like it.

Thanks for commenting on my blog, Suzanne!
