I’ve used various methods to capture songwriting ideas and inspirations. For the last 3-4 years, it’s been primarily the iSight camera and iMovie on my Macbook. It’s the ideal Capture-the-Moment device — I can capture not only the sound but sight, so I can demonstrate what chords I’m playing. (which is sometimes hard to figure out! :-) )
But I’ve never really kept a log of my material, and with ideas being something I’m not short of, I’ve amassed hours of ideas that are uncategorized and unbrowsable, letting unpolished gemstones just lie in a heap.
Well, I’m not gonna tolerate it any more. This is my art, the material from which I concoct the most important offerings I make.
So, I’m going through them, logging them into a spreadsheet.
I don’t know about other artists, but for me, I usually enjoy listening to my creations from the past. Yes, some of them are cringe-inducing, but in an overwhelming majority of them, I spot qualities I really enjoy. I’m still way underdeveloped in many aspects, but writing and composing, I had it from early on. The part that I had trouble with was finding the right forums to present them where people are listening.
Actually I still haven’t figured out where the people who will listen to my offerings are. But the only way to find out is to just put as much of it out, see where the spaghetti sticks to the wall.
So I’m going to put out a lot more music — most of it, in demos and sketches.
For now, I’m just going through all my files, to dig out all the ones with potentials. I’ll be back soon, to share them with you.
