Aristotle’s Hope: Dare (Spills Things)

I envision this to be a slick folk song.  It sounds weird to put “slick” and “folk” together but some of John Mayer or Jars of Clay’s first album contains acoustic strumming and slick production.

It was really hard to fit 3 little episodes into this simple melody with so few syllables.  Not sure I pulled it off — there may be room for more tweaks.  The rhyming is quite a stretch, for example, and I had to abandon it in the last stanza because I just couldn’t part with some lines that packed a lot of emotional punch.

But I’m very happy with where this song is at.  I think many people who consider themselves shy or introverted can relate.

Aristotle's Hope: Dare (Spills Things)

I was seven years old older brother
A brave knight for my blind sister
On my way to share my new toy Sun Kings

In my haste I failed to realize
My soccer ball in a spot so unwise
And saw my toys fly to her face
‘Cause I spill things

An elder lady, loaded bags of food
An intersection in unfriendly mood
Meet this young man who willingly offers kind things

To my surprise she turned down my hand
But only after I grabbed her wristband
Witness her sacks fly onto the street
‘Cause I spill things

Oh how I dared to get out of me
Oh how I stared into your sea

At last I found my long-sought best friend
With you there’s no need to pretend
There’s so much, so much I want to tell you

So I sat her down to tell my story
And Saw her smile back awkwardly
She said she’s not ready to be this close
‘Cause I spill things
